Having plants in your home can reduce stress, purify the air, and give you better sleep and productivity, but so many people think they are difficult. I am here to debunk the myth that you don’t have a green thumb. With a little help, anyone can nurture these 10 easiest house plants.
1. Spider Plant
These fast growing plants are so cute and so simple to keep alive. Indirect sunlight with weekly waterings will keep your spider plant so happy that you will have plenty of “spider” babies to share.
2. Philodendron
In all seriousness, I don’t know how someone could kill a philodendron. You would have to put it in a dark closet you never look in. Yes it will be it’s happiest self, full and luscious, in low light, with water no more than once a week, but these beautiful vines can withstand some neglect. My mother has had on for over 30 years that is still holding on. This is why it is high up on my list of easiest house plants to keep alive.
3. Snake Plant
When you purchase a snake plant, it will fill out the pot and have beautiful layering leaves. This one pictured was propagated not long ago from another plant. Added to the list for their incredible hardiness, a snake plant can go a month without water. Be careful not to over water and place in indirect sunlight.
4. Geranium
Not traditionally a house plant, I added Geraniums in because my mother always kept them in the windowsills of our closed porch. We keep them in the exact spot now and enjoy bright blooms all year long. They will prefer direct sunlight. Always allow the soil to dry 1 inch deep between watering.
5. Corn Plant
Want something a bit larger to fill out your room? A corn plant is a larger plant that needs little attention. It is well known as a house and office plant. Keep the soil moist and place in a bright, indirect light.
6. Jade
I put jade here because it is a succulent and succulents can handle a little less love. That being said, these plants have a shallow root system that can easily rot with too much water. To make sure you get to see the most beautiful, bulbous leaves, water weekly and give it bright, indirect sunlight.
7. African Violet
Given their kind temperament, African Violets are one of the most common house plants. With cute fuzzy leaves and flowers that bloom directly in the middle of the plant, they are a great addition to your home. Keep the soil moist and place the plant in bright, indirect sunlight.
8. Peace Lily
Are you an overwaterer? Yup, that is a thing. You may be killing your plants because you think they need more love than they do. If you are an overbearing plant parent, try a Peace lily. These plants love water. You may remember the 1990’s-2000’s trend of putting them on top of a beta fish bowl. Get yourself a beta fish and let them live their best symbiotic life together.
9. Christmas Cactus
Christmas Cactus get their name from the fact that they bloom just in time for the holiday season. They have hanging branches made up of flat, smooth segments. These plants prefer some direct sunlight. They should be watered when the top inch of soil is dry
10. Fiddle Leaf Fig
If you watch any design show, you have seen a fiddle leaf fig tree. These easy to grow trees are super trendy right now. While they are beautiful to look at with large, broad layered leaves, it is also because they are hardy. Indirect sunlight and a generous weekly watering should be plenty to keep your fiddle leaf happy.
I hope you are feeling more confident to start caring for one of these easiest house plants. Having plants in the house is amazing for your mind and body. Remember to shop local and small for your house plants.
