Dangers of Ticks
As we get outside more in these warmer months, we are likely to come into contact with ticks. Peak season is from March to June, but they are a threat until temperatures drop below freezing. While the most common known disease transmitted by ticks is Lyme, there is many diseases that can be caused by the bite of a tick. See the full list here on from the CDC.
The Essential Oil Ingredients
Traditionally many of theses essential oils were used to repel insects. Some, Like Neem, are still used today as a natural insecticide on plants. By applying them to your skin, you can get the same benefits with no harm to yourself or the environment.
- Eucalyptus
- Lemongrass
- Peppermint
- Neem
- Lavender
How Do They Repel?
While these essential oils are pleasant to us, the potency or strength of the smells are thought to be too much for insects. All five of these oils have been shown to repel ticks. Mixing them together in a carrier liquid will increase the protection received from this DIY all natural tick spray.
Mixing Your DIY All Natural Tick Spray
In a dark glass bottle with a spray top, mix all the ingredients together and then shake well before each use.
The sun’s UV rays increase oil temperatures and cause deterioration to the quality of your oils, so storing pure essential oils in a colored glass container is highly recommended. Colored containers, like cobalt blue and amber-tinted glass, reflect the sun’s rays and protect oils when stored.
When mixing your essential oils, it is important to use distilled water. Distilled water goes through a distilling process that removes the water’s impurities along with all the minerals. It is the purest source of water you can use.
The Witch hazel acts as an emulsifier, breaking up the oils so that they distribute more evenly throughout your blend
IMPORTANT NOTE: This tick spray recipe is for ages 10 years and up. Some essential oils can be irritating to young children and should be diluted more. Double the water and witch hazel or half the oil drops for use from ages 3 to 10 years.
DO NOT use on children under 3 years of age.
