You saw those posts for fall mini sessions coming up with your favorite photographer and you couldn’t resist. There is nothing cuter than your kids on a cozy blanket with the gorgeous fall foliage surrounding them. Or maybe you are planning your look for your wedding day and want to do everything to look your best in those pictures you will cherish forever.
Whatever occasion you have coming up, read on to learn the best makeup tips for a photoshoot. What to avoid and what will be your best friend.
1. Skip the sunblock
As someone who has already had two spots removed, I am a big advocate for protecting your skin. That being said, I recommend skipping SPF the day of photos. The ingredients in these products will cause something known as “flashback” which will make you appear completely washed out.
2. Be a little extra
Flash photography can take up to 20% of the color and intensity of your makeup, so create the look you want and dial it up a few notches. Some of my favorite things to go extra on are…
- Blush- a natural shade will make you appear younger and more full of life
- False Lashes -will make these eyes wider and more visible
- Fill in Brows- adds color and structure
3. Get the right foundation shade
If your neck or face is darker than the other, that will show up more in photographs. Making sure your foundation matches will make you appear more natural. Need help? Take my color match quiz and customize a palette with Maskcara Beauty that fits your needs.
Color Match Quiz4. Highlight and Contour
I know highlight and contour can be intimidating at first, but that is why you should practice your look a few times before the day of the pictures, to make sure you look great.
Your face is three dimensional and by applying one foundation shade and nothing else, you are actually making your face appear more dull and round.
Slim it down, lift it up, and enhance the beautiful structure of your face with contour. Check out my tips on how to contour with ease here.
5. Lips without lipstick are like cake without frosting
There is a few rules to think about when it comes to the lip shade and finish you choose.
Do use
- 2-3 shades darker that your natural lips
- lip scrub the night before to remove dead cells
- apply lip balm to decrease the appearance of cracking
Avoid
- Nude colors- Once that extra 20% of color is taken from these shades, your lips will appear lifeless.
- Ultra Matte finish – these will absorb the light and make your lips look flat and dry
Maskcara Beauty’s shades can be used for both your lips and cheeks
6. A slight sparkle is good, but don’t overdo it
Glitters and intense shimmers can cause quite a reflection when in a photograph. When choosing and applying things like highlighter and eyeshadow keep this in mind.
A nice cream illuminator like the ones from Maskcara here are perfect for a natural candlelit glow to gently bounce light and make those cheekbones pop!
7. Stay put makeup!
One of the most important makeup tips for a photoshoot is making sure the makeup stays. It can get hot, it may be a long day. Whatever the reason is, you just spent your precious time applying makeup, you definitely don’t want it coming off anytime soon. Use a translucent setting powder and set your makeup. a semi matte finish is always nice.
Note for oily skin: setting with a powder is especially important to cut down on shine. Some of my favorites are RCMA translucent powder and the Laura Mercier setting powder
Avoid: HD powders which can show up looking like chalky patches on the face.
Finish off the look with a setting spray. Stay out there by Maskcara for dry to normal skin or Urban Decay De-slick for oily skin.
8. Take a selfie!
Make sure these makeup tips for a photoshoot worked well by testing out the finished product. Take a selfie and seeing how you look. Are your cheeks bright enough? Lips dark enough? Neck blended? Perfect!
