Wearing face masks has become part of our daily lives during the pandemic and with it has come added breakouts. From decreasing added oils, to clogged ducts and irritation. Here are 7 tips from the American Academy of Dermatology on how to prevent acne from face masks.
Always wash your Face before applying your Mask
Washing your face is important, especially if you are going to be wearing a mask all day. Dirt and oil will get trapped and clog the pores under the mask.
Make sure you use a gentle cleanser like the milk cleanser from the Tres Leches Skin Care system. Something that does not foam and strip the skin of its natural pH balancing oils.

Apply a Good Moisturizer
Masks can cause irritation, especially if you are required to wear a medical grade n95 one. With added moisture and friction this may lead the skin to become dry and inflammed.
Use a moisturizer to act as an added barrier to friction and to keep the skin healthy. Search for one that is will be gentle on the skin with at least one of the following ingredients. Ceramide, Hyaluronic Acid, or even lactic acid that is found in the Milk Moisturizer from the Tres Leches skin system.
Skip the Makeup
If you use a non-comedogenic (not acne causing) makeup, then it could be used as an added barrier to prevent breakdown. But since most makeup is an occlusive barrier, it can contribute to clogged pores and breakouts.
Instead focus on your eye makeup. Here is some added tips to make your eyes pop.

Wear only Clean Masks
Wash your masks every night or have a few on hand so you can use a fresh one everyday. As we have seen, dirt, oil, and bacteria all play a part in increased breakouts. Washing your masks every night will help prevent a huge build up of these things.
Wash in a fragrance free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent. Chemicals found in other detergents can further cause irritation to the skin.
Don’t Reuse disposable masks
It’s in the name. Disposable. These masks have no way of being cleaned or sanitized and are not meant for more than one use.
Choose the right mask
Choosing the right fit and fabric for your mask can help with skin irritation and breakouts too. Your mask should be snug, especially around the nose, but comfortable. If it is too large, it will slide, causing irritation.
Avoid synthetic fabrics. Choose a soft, natural, and breathable fabrics like cotton.
Take a break as often as you can
Some of us have to wear a mask all day for work. That doesn’t mean you can’t give yourself a break. When it is safe to do so, go outside and take your mask off. Let you skin breathe.
