“How to look good on a video calls?” I can’t say I am an expert on video conferences. Technology is actually a weak area for me. I am however an expert on the face, which is the main focus of any online video call. I also work with photographers and shoot my own videos, so I know how to make people naturally look their best.
Teaching others to work with and understand their natural beauty, instead of fighting it, is my mission. Once you get these tips down, you will also have a better understanding on how to look good on video calls .
1. Lighting is Everything
I cannot stress this enough. Lighting in a video is everything. The best lighting you can get is soft, diffused natural light from a window. Position yourself in front of that and you will be glowing.
If you don’t have a good spot for natural light or fancy video lighting, I would suggest just grabbing a few lamps and placing them directly in front of you, behind the camera.
Avoid these types of lighting
- Overhead and Side- will cast unflattering shadows
- Harsh Backlighting- Lights behind you will make you a dark shadowy figure. I want you to leave this blog confident to be seen.
- Direct Sunlight- Will wash you out even more. The camera will already do that enough.
Tip*- Walk around your home or office to find the most ideal spot. Check yourself out in the camera. Where are you the most gorgeous? Set up shop there.
2. Correct Camera Angle
The amount of people I see at strange angles. Do not look down into your computer, do not cut off your head or the bottom half of your face.
Why should you avoid looking down? This will widen the bottom of your face and make it appear much larger than it actually is.
Instead, place camera slightly above eye level and then tilt it down slightly. This trick will slim out your face. Now center your body and sit an arms length away so you can still participate comfortably in any chat features. You will appear more confident and engaged.
TIP*- Do a pre-call check by turning on your camera and making sure your angle and lighting looks good.
3. Tidy Background
I am a firm believer that lighting and sitting up with confidence trumps a perfect background. Just make sure it is tidy with minimum distractions.
If you are looking to create a nice background, keep it soft and neutral. You always want to be the main focus.
4. Up Your Makeup by 20%
Cameras will wash you out. They cut about 20% of color. This is why you will want to amplify your makeup to make up the difference. That means if you don’t wear any makeup, try some mascara, blush and lipstick. If you are a makeup wearer, choose shades that are just a hint darker or apply more. You will look more like you do in person this way.
