Eye shadow can be intimidating, especially seeing all the looks that are posted on instagram and pinterest, but with these few tips and tricks you can learn how to apply eyeshadow like a pro. Like everything in life practice makes perfect.
What you will need
- The right tools. I highly recommend the double sided eyeshadow brushes from maskcara beauty. My favorites to get started are the ishadow everything and the blend and tap. You can add the hotline and multitasker for more detailed applications.
- Eyeshadow primer. I personally use my highlight shade from Maskcara Beauty and set it with vanilla dust setting powder. You can find a budget friendly product, like the elf primer, at any store.
- Eyeshadows of course. I love the maskcara beauty shadows and the ability to customize a palette that is perfect for my taste. Want help creating your own, fill out this form here for help.
Step 1: Prime Your Eyelids
Start by priming your eyelids with a eyeshadow primer. An eyeshadow primer is necessary to apply before eyeshadow to allow your eyeshadows to stick better. Primer also helps to intensify your shadow and allows it show more true to the color you see in the pan.
Step 2. The transtion shade
A transition shade should be one to two shades darker than your natural complexion. It is something that helps to merge colors together, and also gives some depth to your eyeshadow. Think of this shade as “the middle man,” that brings the darker shade and the lightest shade together. Using a transition shade will make sure there are no harsh lines.
Step 3: The Crease
What is your crease? Your crease is the space between where your eyelids fold and where your brow bone begins. That sort of crack that is formed there. Use a fluffy brush to start at the outer corner making circular motions, then sweep back and forth like a windshield wiper. Continue this step, always starting at the outer corner when you pick up more eyeshadow, until you reach your desired color. You can use a second shade that is darker to further deepen this crease and add more dimension to the eyeshadow look.
Step 4: The Outer V
Take your darkest color and place the shade on the outer v of your eye with a small eyeshadow brush. To find your outer V, place your brush near the outer end of your lashline, then sweep just slightly in towards your nose. Take the brush back to the end of the lashline and go slightly up and into your crease. After you’ve placed your shadow, make sure to take your fluffy brush and blend out the edges so it doesn’t look harsh.
Step 5: The Lid Shade
Now it is time to apply our lid shade. Go for a light, shimmery eyeshadow to for a bright look or use a medium color if you want to make the look dark and smoky.
Take your lid color and pat it onto your lid. Patting the shadow will make the pigment darker and help prevent the product from falling onto your face. Apply this shade directly on the lid and stop at the crease especially if you are using a shimmer. A good rule of thumb is to only use shimmers on the lid.
Of course makeup is fun and you can experiment all you want. You do not have to use all of these steps every time. Remember Practice makes perfect when you are learning how to apply eyeshadow. Be bold and have fun!
