What else is there to clean? While we are awakened to getting our homes fresh and clean for the warming weather, I thought it would be a good time to talk about how to spring clean your makeup too. Makeup should be cleaned and replaced on occasion. Read on for 5 tips on how to rid your makeup of bacteria and make sure it is doing it’s job of making you look your best. Bonus Tip for SEINT beauty 3d foundation users at the end.
1. Toss Outdated Products
What is the shelf life of makeup? Each product is different, but there should be a small jar symbol on the packaging with the length of time written in months. Here is a general rule of thumb of when you should be replacing your makeup products and how to clean what you keep.
2. Toss what you don’t use
Are you just not into that color anymore? Have you not touched that makeup palette in the last 6 months. Maybe you will be inspired when you sort through your makeup, that is great! But if you know that palette or shade will just keep sitting there, give it up.
3. Wash Your Brushes
Makeup brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria. The more makeup on the brush, the worse application you will get too. Makeup brushes should be washed a minimum of once a week.

Replace your makeup blending sponge every 3 months as they cannot be sanitized.

4. Sanitize What You Keep
Now that you have your favorites to keep, lets get to sanitizing.
- Lipstick- Wipe top layer with q-tip and then dip in alcohol for 30 seconds
- Eyeshadows or Pressed Powders- Gently scrape top layer off with flat blade, wipe with alcohol swab
- Pencil eyeliner- Sharpen tip to remove top layer
- Cream Eyeliner Pen- Dip tip in alcohol for 30 seconds
- Potted Products (like maskcara tins)- Wipe top layer with alcohol swab
*there is no way to sanitize products with wands that are dipped directly into product after use.
5. Upgrade Your Organization.
The last step to spring clean your makeup. After you finish sorting and sanitizing, make sure to wipe down your makeup bag. If you are looking for a pretty new way to store your makeup, consider one of these options.
- Target Gold Organizer
- Beauty Sponge Blender holder
- 2 piece acrylic makeup storage
- White cup brush holder
- Horizontal Pen stand Makeup Brush holder– works great for Maskcara’s Double sided brushes
