Inner Beauty is great, but a little mascara never hurt. Mascara is that product that brings the look together. If we have limited time, it is the product that we wont go without. It brightens, opens, and makes those lashes frame the windows to your soul. But it can clump, it can run, so here is 10 tips for the perfect mascara application.
1. Get down to the roots
This is by far the number one mascara tip. If you don’t get down to the root your mascara will not be as natural looking and you wont get the curl and lift.
2. Twirl, don’t pump
Pumping the wand in and out of the mascara will only push air into the tube which will speed up drying. Instead gently twirl the wand in the tube for an even distribution of product.
3. Apply extra coats
Applying 3-5 coats of mascara will give you the best look. Applying this many layers incorrectly will cause a lot of clumping, so read on to get more of the best application techniques.
4. Wiggle at the base, not all the way through.
We were taught to zig zag the brush all the way through the lashes, but this method can increase clumping of the fine lashes. instead wiggle at the base only to saturate the roots and then brush through the rest.
5. Separate before applying more layers
To make sure your mascara does not appear too clumped, make sure they are how you will like them before applying another layer. Turn your wand vertical to remove large clumps or use tweezers to separate large clumps.
Don’t forget to use one of these layers to coat the backside of your lashes too.
6. Choose your formula
Choosing the perfect mascara can be overwhelming. There are so many brands and formula. Knowing what you want and need is the first step.
If you have short, stubby lashes then layering a volumizing and lengthening formula may be best. Have your mascara doing double duty with the Shakelee YOUTH revitalizing and conditioning mascara. This mascara lengthens and has beneficial ingredients to stimulate growth.
If your lashes are extremely long and straight, using a curling formula paired with a lash curler will be your combo. Benefits Roller Lash is a great option.
If you have decent length, add more thickness with a volumizing formula. Loreal Voluminous Original is a personal favorite for this and is used by top makeup artists.
7. Choose Your Wand
Not all wands are created equal. You may have purchased different mascaras and noticed the variety of brushes, but what do they each do?
A thick bristled brush is designed to give you volume, while the harder plastic or rubber brushes give length. There is also a variety of shapes to get a different application. Examples would be to wing out the corners or fan a curl.
These different wands will usually accompany the formula and style product you desire. Try a couple to figure out what you like best. Grab some sample sizes if possible to try them all.
8. Refresh and replace often
You should be replacing your mascara every 3 months. This is due to bacteria and drying of the product. At the end of it’s life you will notice it is not applying as smoothly. Prolong the product just a little by soaking the tube in warm water right before application. Make sure the top is tightly secured.
9. Increase the long lasting wear
Do you notice your mascara falling off and not holding all day? Try dusting it with a translucent setting powder to prevent the dreaded racoon eyes
10. Clean up messes
Uh oh!! You were just about done your makeup and you hit your skin with the mascara wand. Do not wipe it right away. Wait until the clump dries and then gently rub it off with a clean spoolie brush.
I hope these tips for the perfect mascara application made you realize that your lashes are uniquely beautiful. That being said, the product you place on them should compliment them.
