There is a lot of “can’ts” and “rules” about what older women should and shouldn’t wear when it comes to makeup. This is not one of those posts. It is simply some guidelines and makeup tips for mature skin that will get you the most of of your look. A way to work around and minimize any spotlighting of wrinkles and the effects of gravity. Tips and tricks will include the best products to use and my favorite application techniques. Makeup is a form of art, so have fun!
Find a Skin Care and Stick to it
Get a skincare that works well for you. This step is first and foremost for anyone. Aging brings about decreased elasticity, as well as thinning, both of which cause drooping of the skin and wrinkles to form. Using a full line with a gentle cleanser, toner, and moisturizer can help slow and reverse some of the signs of aging. Exfoliating once a week is also important to remove rough, dry skin.
The Tres Leches skin care line from Maskcara Beauty has all the beneficial ingredients, but is gentle and soothing to the skin. Decrease aging with honey and lactic acid milk cultures. It is packed with vitamins and antioxidants to increase collagen, as well as ingredients that can lock in moisture. Shop the full line here
Use a Cream Foundation
Cream foundations are great for all skin types. they are buildable and blendable which can be great for beginners or those that are not confident with applying makeup. Cream foundations give the most natural, youthful appearance because they do not set into and dry around wrinkles. Instead they move with the contours of your face acting as a perfect second skin.
Maskcara Beauty’s cream highlight foundations are all made with a yellow base which further enhances the natural glow you can obtain with cream foundations. Fill out my form below for a FREE online consultation. Let’s work together to customize a makeup palette that is perfect for you.
Stop Concealing like you are 25
Stop concealing in a triangle shape directly under your eyes. Just because you see someone on youtube or social media doing their makeup one way, does not mean that way is going to work for you. Shades that are too light for your skin will put a spotlight on fine lines, textures, and wrinkles. You still want the added benefit of using a lighter shade and bringing the focus to the center of your face, so here is what you should do instead.
After you have finished applying your main foundation shade, find where your eye socket ends under your eye. Apply a lighter, brighter shade in a sideways C shape following just under the eye socket. Then, use a makeup sponge to blend together.
Brightening your under eye will give a lifted, awakened appearance. Avoiding too many layers on the thin skin directly under the eyes will prevent makeup from depositing into the wrinkles there. Less is more in this instance.
You can also put a light layer of this brightening shade down the bridge of your nose, and on your chin for added dimension.
Contour is not just for movie stars and young women
Speaking of dimension, just because you are older, does not mean you should skip out on the benefits of contour. For real, you should embrace the wonder that is contour. We are talking lifting and tucking with makeup.
Contour is using a darker shade to deepen and enhance the bone structure of your face. It lifts and sculpts. Remember the drooping that comes with aging, contour can give the illusion that your face is not quite as round and that the skin under your chin does not hang so much.
Apply contour directly on your cheek bones, use it to frame your face and hide the double chin. Learn about my FREE online consultations below. I would love to build a custom palette for you that includes a cream contour. You can check out a step by step on how to apply it here.
Blending Sponges are your friend
Use a blending sponge like the perfector sponge here. These sponges are designed to press the products into your skin, getting between wrinkles, but also making sure there is not too much product. This will help prevent the look of cakiness that can occur with makeup.
Line your eyes to draw attention to the center of your face.
You may have heard to avoid eye liner because it is harsh and can close up the eye. This is true if you apply too much, but there is a way to apply it to draw attention to the center of the face and make the eyes more open and awake.
Use a more subtle gel or cream product like the cola contour by maskcara beauty. On my mature clients I take the hotline brush and stamp along the top lash line. As we age our eyelids become loose and hooded, so stamping the product will make it go on more smooth. Dragging the skin or pulling it tight will not work out as well. Once the skin is released, the liner will not be where you want it.
For the bottom lash line, take the same product and brush and stamp the line, this time stopping at the pupil. Going all the way to the inner corner will close the eye. Stopping half way will give the illusion that the eye is lifted and tilted up at the outer corners. Take a brush like the multitasker and gently smudge the line to get rid of any harsh lines.
You have earned the right to glow
I hear it all the time, “Mature women should skip illuminator” and Mature women should not use shimmer eyeshadows”. Girl, you have earned the right to sparkle. As we talked about previously, light colors or shimmers can put a spotlight on textures and wrinkles, when applied correctly, you can shine too without appearing older.
As everyone should, make sure to only use shimmer eyeshadows on your lid, otherwise have fun with your eyes! As far as highlight and illuminators go, a good thing to remember is apply them directly on top of the cheek bone, where the skin is most tight and the wrinkles are less evident.
I personally love the cream illuminators from maskcara beauty. They give you a youthful candlelit glow by catching the light and bouncing it off the tops of your cheeks. Apply them down your nose and on your cupids bow too!
