If you instill a love of being active and being outside into your children at a young age, you have instilled a positive view of being healthy. It is hard as a mom to find time to exercise alone and if I am being honest structured exercise is just NO fun. I absolutely adore being active and so do my kids. Here are some of our favorite ways to get active as a family.
Walking/Hiking
Walking or hiking is of course the easiest way. No equipment needed. doesn’t cost one cent. Just explore all around you. Find the beautiful hidden trails. build up to reaching the peak of a mountain together. there is nothing greater than breaking tree line to your well deserved view.
Swimming
We swim alot in the summer. Lakes, Ponds, Oceans and pools. Doesn’t everyone. Swimming is lovely because it is low impact and a ton of fun. Summer doesn’t have to be the only time you swim together.
Check out your local YMCA or equivalent community center for their free swim hours in the chillier months. It is a fabulous break from being stuck at home. It is a bit more pricey, but sometimes we even rent a room in a local hotel, just to use their pool.
Biking
Biking is a great way to get active as a family because you can easily take everyone (minus those tiny newborns). From bike seats to trailers, there is something for every stage of childhood. Check out a few of our favorites below.
The IBert child Safe T seat is great because the toddler sits in between your arms. This makes it is easier to keep your center of gravity.
If you have two children that can’t ride themselves, then a bike trailer, like this Allen Sports one is nice.
Is one of your children almost ready to ride, but not quite there. The Kazam WeeRide Co-Pilot Bike Trailer attaches to the back of an adult sized bike, so your child can help pedal, but keep up.
Boating
Boating is another sport that requires more equipment, but is totally worth it if you love being on the water. Canoe or kayaks, what ever you decide, you can get the kids in on it. Purchase small paddles or oars so they can help propel the boat forward too.
Skiing
If you are a skier, start your kids learning young too. Kids grow fast and purchasing gear every year can get expensive. Chances are your local mountain will have a seasonal rental program. Pay a seasonal fee and use their gear each time you go to the mountain.
Yoga
All of the other activities have been outdoors. While I will always encourage being outdoors, sometimes that is not possible. Sometimes you need a gentler, relaxing kind of exercise together. That is when we do Yoga.
Yoga is used in our house when we need to calm down. Before bed sometimes. When we are having an anxious/stressful kind of day. Yoga is a great way to reset and reconnect with peace. While it is low impact, it is an incredible way to build balance and strength.
Check out Cosmic Kids on you tube for free weekly kids yoga. Lots of the practices are modeled after favorite characters, movies or shows.
